Heritage Practice in Contested Spaces

Heritage Practice in Contested Spaces is an exciting participatory learning opportunity developed by Causeway Museum Service in collaboration with partners ranging from local community groups to international organisations. It looks at a range of impressive local work in a wider context with ‘learning to learn’ a key objective. It is relevant to everyone who engages with or uses heritage in their work.

A practical hands - on opportunity to:Explore and develop practice evaluating the impact of heritage work in our communities and engage with international practitioners and academics to benchmark your work

Heritage Practice in Contested Spaces on Facebook

As museums and heritage practitioners engage with communities during the Decade of Anniversaries, this seminar provides a practical hands - on opportunity to:

  • explore and develop practice evaluating the impact of heritage work in our communities
  • engage with international practitioners and academics to benchmark your work
  • consider who owns our heritage - the expert versus the community voice

This seminar is supported by Community Relations Council and North East PEACEIII Partnership Cultural Fusions Project and organised by Causeway Museum Service (CMS) with MINOM* and in association with ICOM Ireland.

Sessions will be facilitated by a renowned expert in evaluation practices, Professor Ross Velore Roholt  (University of Minnesota) and other regional and international experts, who will bring their own informed knowledge, to help participants critically evaluate the presented case studies and their own work. Using case studies drawn from CMS innovative practice alongside regional and international experiences, this practical ‘hands – on’ seminar will enable attendees to participate, share and engage with a wide range of heritage practitioners from community, universities, museums and NGOs.  The focus on innovative evaluation practice will bring opportunities to engage in reflective practice and capture learning for individuals, organisations and funders.

This seminar is aimed at those who work at all levels in museums, heritage and community sectors, or whose work includes or is impacted by heritage practice eg Good Relations, tourism, economic development etc. Please note that up to 10 bursaries are available each day to cover accommodation and costs for community or volunteer participants.

The programme will kick off in the Roe Valley Arts And Cultural Centre, Limavady..

The following two days will take participants and facilitators out into the dramatic, historic Causeway area into community venues to explore and engage with case studies:

  • heritage practice in contested urban and rural spaces,
  • using heritage landscapes to understand and challenge contested histories

The final day will return to the Centre to consider and participate in heritage methodologies, before final concluding sessions.

Full details will be circulated in August with booking forms and information on places to stay. Whilst preference will be given to those participants wishing to attend the full seminar, it will be possible to book for specific days. Up to 10 bursaries each day to cover accommodation and costs are available for community or volunteer participants.
